How did you come to specialise in polyurethanes?

H.-J. Keil: Keil worked as a heating construction company for private and commercial customers. One day Heinrich Stagge, a trained master weigher and head of the workshop and maintenance of the raw materials warehouse at Elastogran (now BASF), asked if some Keil employees in the raw materials warehouse could help with repair and maintenance work on a permanent basis. This mainly involved welding work.

For the production of insulating foam for pipelines, Keil Anlagenbau has been awarded the contract to supply a storage system for pentane including safety equipment. The pentane will be used for the production of PU foam for the insulation of an oil pipeline from Uganda to the coast of Tanzania.

The client originated in 2016 from the idea of the founder, who previously worked in the field of asbestos board disposal, to recycle insulation boards and reprocess them into new boards, according to the principles of Cradle to Cradle.

Keil Anlagenbau was able to complete a tank farm for the expansion of a production site in Baden-Würtemberg at the beginning of the year.

It aims to limit the average temperature increase to 2 °C, preferably 1.5 °C. For industrial companies, production without CO2 emissions is not possible. For this reason, climate neutrality must be the goal for industry. According to the principle of climate neutrality, as much CO2 must be bound as was previously emitted. It is therefore not only necessary to reduce CO2 emissions, but also to find ways to bind the emitted CO2 again, for example by reforesting forests or developing solutions for recycling materials.

In recent years, the demand for heat pumps as an alternative form of heating has been increasing strongly in Europe, especially in private households. It is expected that up to 5 million heat pumps will be installed annually in private households in the 2030s.

With the increase in demand for heat pumps, not only in private households but also in industry and the public sector, production capacity is also increasing to meet demand in Europe and worldwide. While only 3.7 million heat pumps were produced in Europe in 2009, 11.6 million units could be produced in 2019. This is an increase of 68 %, which is predicted to accelerate even further in the years to come.

This year Keil Anlagenbau celebrates its 50th anniversary. In the course of time, the company has developed from a one-man central heating and ventilation master craftsman's business to a specialised process engineering company that operates internationally.
